3 Do-It-Yourself Projects Houston First Time Home Buyers Should Consider Outsourcing
If you are a do it “yourselfer”, here are three things you may want to hand over to a professional. According to Adam Long, president of the HomeTeam Inspection service, home inspectors are reporting a surge in DIY mishaps that end up costing homeowners far more than they were trying to save by doing it themselves. Let’s begin with:
Landscape grading – doing this yourself may cause improper draining, flooding or structural damage. When your home was build, the yard was graded so water flow away from the home. If grading is not properly maintained, it may cause water to rush around the foundation or enter crawl space. If you plan on adding landscaping or outdoor elements that may change the water flow around your home, you may want to get the help or advice of a professional before you begin.
Plumbing – Changing a faucet or updating an appliance may seem easy enough, however, you may risk water leaks, flooding or mold to your home if the plumbing is wrongly installed or repaired. Be careful if you choose to replace a faucet or dishwasher. A dishwasher for example, requires lots of water pressure and if not properly connected, could cause flooding in your kitchen. One wrong connection can become very expensive very quickly.
Electrical work – Installing a lighting fixture, or dimmer switch, may cause electrocution or home fire if it is not done correctly. Inspectors are spotting overloaded circuit boxes, exposed wires, and improper junction boxes. Keep in mind, faulty wiring can cause shorts that lead to house fires. In addition, for something as important as electrical work, you also want to make sure it is done up to code which may require permits. Just an FYI.
Being handy is almost a necessary requirement as a homeowner. However, while you’re being handy, you may want to be a bit careful when it comes to certain fixes. In the meantime, please, get your paint and drop cloth on (LoL). Helping you to make powerful and informed decisions. Thank you so much for stopping by. Until next time...Diana
