This Is How Houston VA First time home buyers Can Get Their dd-214

Are you a veteran thinking of using your zero down VA benefit to purchase a home? To use your zero down VA Loan benefit, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214 to prove your eligibility. Your DD-214 Report of Discharge, serves as the official proof of military service and verifies your military discharge, Honorable, or Dishonorable.

In addition, while the DD-214 provides the lender with a variety of information that includes rank, education, and any awards, the most important information lenders look for on the document is time served and type of discharge. Here is how to obtain a copy of your DD-214.

To obtain a copy of your DD-214 you can log onto the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and click on the blue link in the middle of the screen that say go to milConnect. Once you are signed in:

  • Click on Correspondence/ Documentation. Then select Defense Personnel Records Information (DPRIS) from the drop-down menu

  • Choose the Personnel File tab.

  • Select Request My Personnel File

  • Complete the form.

  • In the document Index section, check the boxes next to the document(s) you’d like to request. In this case it would be the DD-214

  • Click on the create and send request button.

You will receive an email letting you know your request is being processed. You will also receive a second email when your request is complete and your files are ready for you to review and download.

You can also check the status of your military records request by signing in to milConnect and going to the Personnel File tab within the Defense Personnel Records Information (DPRIS) section. This is also where you’ll review and download your files once they’re ready.
