Hi there, thanks for stopping by. This summer's heat has been brutal. It seems like by the time you leave the grocery store and pull into the garage, some of the food are fully cooked. In addition, the inferno type heat has kept air conditioners running none stop.

The result, astronomical energy bill. So which appliance is using the most energy anyway? While your bill will tell you the total amount of energy used, the amount due and payment date, it will not tell you which appliance is actually using the most energy. So, just in case you were wondering, below, you will find the list of appliance that use the most and the least energy.

  • Heating and cooling 45%-50%

  • Water heater - 12%

  • Lighting -12%

  • Refrigerator - 8%

  • Washer and dryer - 8%

  • Electric oven - 5%

  • Dishwasher - 2%

  • TV and cable box - 2%

So there you have it. If you are looking for ways to lower your energy bill, the first thing you may want to do is increase your thermostat temperature, especially when no one is home. At our home, we like to be very comfortable, so, while we do use the AC, we also keep the fan on, and when possible, we open the windows, mostly at night or during the very early morning. This may not be an option for some.

Buying ENERGY STAR - certified appliances has also been extremely helpful. You may want to look into getting a smart thermostat if you don't already have one. Also, you may want to have a professional check, to make sure you have proper insulation. While these tips will not totally eliminate your monthly energy bill, they may help to reduce it a bit.

If it matters to you, it matters to us. We at First Home Houston is always looking out for your best interest. As always, we thank you for stopping by. Until next time… Diana.
