Now that you have purchased your first home, you may be in the process of personalizing it inside and out, which may include gardening. Before you begin your gardening project, here are a few tips to help you get started. Oh! you may end up saving a lot of time and money as well.

  1. Set a garden budget. Know how much you want to spend before you begin. You also should know how much you want to spend to maintain your garden as well.

  2. Essential garden tools you may need to get started include, gloves, hand pruner, gardening scissors, shovel, hoes, garden forks, watering can and a hose.

  3. Know how much time you are willing to spend on maintaining your new garden. At first, you may be willing to spend a lot of time on it, however, as time goes by, may be not so much. Knowing how much time you are willing to spend will help you to decide the type of plants you should buy, for example, evergreens or flowering plants?

  4. Understanding your planting zone can help you decide which plants are likely to thrive in your zone. This can prevent you from buying plants that may die quickly, require massive amount of water and or care.

  5. Will your plants need sun or shade? Some plants require full sunlight, some require partial sun and some require shade. Knowing this will save you time and money.

  6. Understanding your soil is essential, because different plants require different soil. Therefore, you do want to make sure to use the correct soil for your plants. The sales person at your nursery and garden center can help with this.

  7.  Good drainage is essential for moisture and nutrients to reach root of plants. Compost, aged manure or used coffee grounds can help.

  8. Using a good quality mulch around your plants, will help to nourish the topsoil, and also help to prevent weeds.

  9. How much water will your plants need to thrive? For example, in dry climate, drought-tolerant plants may be best.

  10. You also want to have a pest control plan in place to get rid of pest as quickly as possible. Also, be careful when you look online for ideas.
