11 Easy Care Plants for Houston First Time Home Buyers

Buying your first home is no easy feat, but you have done it. Congratulations! You have always wanted a garden and now you can have one. To help you get started, here are 11 easy to grow plants that should make your transition as a new homeowner, into a gardener, fun and relatively easy. Let the dirt begin. Photo above is begonia.

  1. Portulaca, also called moss rose – is really pretty in red, pink, tangerine and orange. It grows in full sun, with well-draining soil and can tolerate some drought.

  2. Zinnia – is available in almost every color and a variety of heights. They like the sun.

  3.  Marigolds – loves the sun and bloom in colorful red, yellow and gold.

  4.  Pansies – loves the sun and soil that drains well.

  5. Impatiens – likes shade and just enough water to prevent wilting. The new hybrid will grow in shade or partial sun and resists downy mildew disease as well.

  6.  Begonias – one of my absolute favorites because they really require very little care. They are not fussy. Give them sun or shade and they will be happy. Oh! Don’t forget water.

  7. Snapdragons – If you love butterflies, you will really enjoy bringing them into your garden with snapdragons. What else is great about snapdragons, they can often handle harsh weather into the fall. Within reasons of course.

  8.  Daffodils – I just love this shade of yellow along with it's gentle fragrance. These little pretties, loves the sun or part shade and don’t mind being in the ground or a container.

  9. Daylilies – loves the sun and any kind of soil as long as it drains well.

  10.  Phlox- loves lot of sun and will keep your garden filled with it's delicate fragrance. Choose from pink, white, coral or lavender.

  11.  Yarrow – super easy to grow in average soil, full sun and good drainage.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by. Until next time...Diana
